The City Hall Salisbury
 |
 |
During the latter half of the Nineties, James worked part time at the City Hall in Salisbury.
It was an enjoyable pass time and he came to witness many famous acts performing at the theatre, once a thriving cinema.
During quieter moments, he would cast an eye around at the remaining Art deco furnishings and ceiling designs and wonder about its past life.
He took it upon himself to research the history of the building, uncovering some fascinating photographs and locating former staff and relatives of people who had served in the building between 1937 and 1962.

|
Recording some precious memories, James built up a picture of day-to-day life in the old Picture House, run by a colourful manager whose moods could be gauged by the colour of his ties and suits!
Running to 32 pages and 5,000 words, this informative and interesting book will appeal to anyone interested in cinema and theatre history, or who is interested in the history of Salisbury in Wiltshire.

The book was launched at the City Hall in November 1998 and became the best seller in the City for that particular year. pictured are local Jazz singer Rosemary Squires (above) and James cutting a special celebratory cake with the then Mayor of Salisbury, Mrs Tanner and Manager, Phil Smith.
